We’ve rounded up a few of the best spots to drop anchor this season, favourites among cruisers for their accessibility, natural beauty, and the chance to connect with the wider boating community.
Urupukapuka Island
The largest and most social island in the Bay, Urupukapuka is a favourite for overnight stays, especially along its southeastern coastline. The island’s forest is pest-free and teeming with native birdlife like Saddleback and Blue Robin, thanks to long-standing conservation work.
There are walking tracks that crisscross the island, offering scenic views and access from all main beaches. Otehei Bay is a popular daytime stop, with a public dock and a casual waterfront restaurant, perfect for a cold drink and calamari in the sun.
When anchoring, be mindful of the seagrass seabed. A reliable anchor and plenty of swing room are key!
Motuarohia Island (Roberton Island)
Known for its twin lagoons and safe swimming areas, Motuarohia is a great family-friendly stop in a northerly breeze. A long sandy beach protects two shallow lagoons, ideal for snorkelling or letting the kids paddle safely.
A short walk to the summit rewards you with panoramic views of the Bay and plaques telling the story of the island’s early Māori settlement and Captain Cook’s historic landing.
It’s a well-loved anchorage for cruisers looking for a mix of calm, history, and water activities in one spot.
Maunganui Bay (Deep Water Cove)
This is one of the Bay’s most magical locations, well-sheltered and known for its excellent holding in deep water. As a no-take marine reserve, it's packed with fish and ideal for underwater adventures.
Divers come here for the HMNZS Canterbury wreck, which lies mid-bay and is now fully colonised by marine life. Around the outer rocks and beach edge, snorkellers and families can enjoy crystal-clear waters and diverse sea life.
It’s an easy favourite among cruisers, divers, and day trippers alike.
Port Opua
Kick off or wrap up your Bay of Islands adventure at Port Opua. Top up your fuel, grab provisions, or enjoy a bite to eat, all right on the waterfront. The 36° Brokers office is located here too, so swing by for a chat or browse current listings.
Whether you’re island-hopping for the weekend or planning a longer coastal cruise, the Bay of Islands is packed with anchorages that make every stop worthwhile. See you out there.
