A Purpose-Built Racer for Sailors Who Want More
Beneteau’s latest launch, the First 36 SE (Seascape Edition), is turning heads, and for good reason. Developed in collaboration with Seascape, this planing racer isn’t just another performance boat; it’s a tool for those who want to sail harder, faster, and more purposefully.
Built on the bones of the already-proven First 36 - winner of the Rolex Middle Sea Race - the SE version strips back unnecessary weight, dials up responsiveness, and brings the sailor closer to the action. Aimed at sailors who thrive outside their comfort zone, the First 36 SE embodies a shift toward authenticity and connection in performance sailing.
The boat is the result of a pedigree design team: Samuel Manuard, architect of the original First 36, worked alongside Bernard Nivelt to push the design into pure IRC territory, while Maurizio Cossutti ensured it also hits hard under ORC rules. The result? An optimized APH of ~520 for fully-crewed teams and ~530 for double-handers, without compromising feel at the helm.
Weight savings are significant - 400kg down from the standard First 36, thanks to a lighter build and refined hull design. The waterline is shorter, wetted surface reduced, and the acceleration off the breeze is something sailors will feel instantly. Tiller steering replaces wheels, offering direct connection and greater agility, while the foam deck grip and flush racing valves speak to practical upgrades from those who’ve been in the trenches.
With a growing First SE community of over 1,000 sailors worldwide, this boat isn't launching into a vacuum, it's entering a movement. For those who race competitively or push their boats on coastal passages, the First 36 SE offers a way back to what makes sailing great: connection, performance, and a good dose of speed.
